Ian in ParadeSergeant Ian M. Dent

Sgt. Dent is one of our longest serving officers having been with our agency since September 2009. He was instrumental in establishing the Chaplain’s program providing for the spiritual oversight and well being of our officers and their families. As a Chaplain, he serves the citizens of our community by being available to respond to a variety of incidents. You can find out more about our Chaplain’s Program here.

In addition to serving as our Chaplain, Sgt. Dent is a patrol supervisor responsible for leading and managing the daily activities and assignments of officers in a uniformed patrol squad and provides oversight for incident investigations, traffic enforcement, and crashes. He assisted in the development of the Field Training and Evaluation Program for new officers as well as developing a comprehensive training program to qualify officers seeking additional responsibility as a Watch Commander. He takes care of our patrol schedule, coordinates off-duty security, maintains and repairs our in car law enforcement equipment, and our Mobile Data Terminals.

Sgt. Dent serves as a co-pastor of Three Rivers Church in St. Marys where he is known as Pastor Ian. He's been in vocational ministry for over fourteen years. He has an Associate of Science degree in General Studies, a B.S. in Liberal Arts (emphasis in leadership, administration, and sociology), a B.A. and M.A in Pastoral Studies, and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Pastoral Leadership. He is a trained biblical counselor with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors.

Sgt. Dent brings a wealth of leadership experience to the Department. He served honorably in the United States Navy for twenty-three years in the submarine community and retired as a Master Chief Machinist’s Mate in September 2006. He graduated from the Navy's Nuclear Power training pipeline as well as numerous technical and leadership schools. He volunteers as a Chaplain with the Southeast Georgia Health System - Camden Campus, is a certified Salvation Army Disaster Relief and Pathway of Hope Volunteer, teaches inductive Bible study methods for In Worship Ministries, and is a member of the Georgia Sheriff's Association Chaplain's Division. He is one of the few peace officers in Georgia that is certified by the State of Georgia Peace Officer and Training Council as a Chaplain and as a Police Officer. He serves on two citizen boards in St. Marys: the Oak Grove Cemetery Authority and the Ethics Board
