Lieutenant Chris Winkle

Lt. Winkle (Bio-Headshot)Lt. Winkle began his law enforcement career as a Patrol Officer with the St. Marys Police Department in 2006 and has continued to proudly  serve the City of St. Marys, GA. He is currently assigned as the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Commander. He has served in a variety of roles including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer, and field supervisor before being promoted to Lieutenant and assuming command of CID. He was called upon to serve as the Uniform Patrol Commander through the trying 2020 calendar year. In January 2021, he returned to his primary duty as the CID Commander. Throughout the years, he has served on the Special Response Team (SRT) and in our Honor Guard. In addition to his responsibility as our CID Commander, Lt. Additionally, he is a member of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, a member of the National Association of Computer Voice Stress Analysts and holds certifications as a Georgia POST General Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Taser Instructor, and Computer Voice Stress Analyst. Lt. Winkle is our lead armorer responsible for the Department's weapons and ammunition. He also takes care of our shooting range and is a Range Master.

Lt. Winkle is a third generation law enforcement officer who has a passion for serving his community and being a voice for those who have been victimized. One of his primary focuses is on the well being and safety of all community members and stakeholders. He is intentional about building a sense of transparency, trust, and teamwork with citizens, businesses, and fellow law enforcement officers across the city and throughout the state. He is committed to ensuring the employees under his command perform their duties with a service-oriented mindset focusing on respect for all. He has been the recipient of numerous commendations and awards including his selection as Officer of the Year (three times) and Detective of the Year.

Lt. Winkle lived all his life in California before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He came to our area where he served with the Marine Corps Security Force Company at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, GA. He previously served with the Battalion Landing Team, Second Battalion, Second Marines at Camp Lajeune, NC. Prior to that, he served with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit also at Camp Lajeune. He is a recreational outdoor and shooting enthusiast who competes in Glock Sport Shooting Foundation events. He is proficient on numerous weapons platforms and is consistently our top shooter. He is the proud father of an adult son and one teenage son.
