Firefighters are Community Servants
Firefighters are oftentimes seen around town performing many of their daily, weekly, monthly and yearly duties including testing fire hydrants, testing pumps on the fire trucks and testing fire hose. They are also asked on a regular basis to attend community functions, assist with events at the senior center and provide training, such as the proper use of fire extinguishers, to various organizations.
Birthday parties at the fire stations are a huge hit with children. As part of having a birthday party at the fire station, children and adults are given tours of the fire station and the fire trucks, they are given the opportunity to ‘discharge’ a real fire hose (open the nozzle and spray water) and they may even have the chance to try on a firefighter’s fire gear!
The annual ‘Letters to Santa’ and Christmas Lights/Music Show is an eagerly awaited community holiday event sponsored by St. Marys Volunteer Fire Department and manned by fire department staff and volunteers. This event usually starts the weekend after Thanksgiving and continues for several weeks into December. Children, and adults, are able to stop by Station 9 for hot chocolate and cookies while dropping off their letters to Santa in a special mail box inside the station. The station is ‘decked’ out in full Christmas regalia… lights, decorations, trees, a ‘fireplace’ set and plenty of holiday tunes!
